Bougainvillea  Flamboyant  Poinsettia and butterly

Set in botanic gardens by the ocean, the hotel is 10 minutes from Stone Town or from the Airport but is an oasis of peace to return to after your busy day.
Prices are reasonable and the emphasis is on giving you good value while maintaining high standards of service.

Mbweni rooms exterior  The Baobab Suite

Mbweni offers accommodation for no more than 30 guests. All the rooms are air-conditioned, with ceiling fans and louvred windows to the balcony.
They are furnished in exotic Zanzibar style and every room has views of the Indian Ocean and of the gardens.

Mbweni Pool and beach

The crystal clear fresh water pool on the edge of the beach lies between the rooms and the restaurant where traditional spicy foods and a panoply of seafood delicacies await the discerning diner. Dinner is usually served in our Raintree Restaurant, but we often set up beach barbecues with candlelit tables on the shore,
or in the ruined chapel or elsewhere in the beautiful grounds.

Frangipani  Massage   aromatherapy

The Bustani Spa (Bustani means "Garden") offers many exciting pampering treatments such as Aromatherapy, Facials, Beauty Treatments
and much more in two beautiful rooms set in the old Ruins.

The Bustani Spa is pleased to offer every hotel guest this special introductory offer:
Get two treatments and receive the cheapest one free!

Barbecue on a sandbank   Sunbather

We offer many exciting activities including dhow trips to the islets and sandbanks opposite the hotel, swimming, fishing, diving, snorkelling, a nature trail and visits to see the spice plantations, stone town and to swim with dolphins. These trips can easily be arranged by our reception staff after you arrive in Zanzibar.

Aerial view   Mangrove Bar

The jetty passes through the mangroves to the sea - making embarkation to Chumbe Island and other boats much easier! We can offer trips to the sandbanks, to stone town or to the islands nearby, on request. The Mangrove Bar perches over the ocean, perfect for that evening sundowner!

Kayakking near Mbweni  Kayak in the mangroves  Kayak and jetty

It is very pleasant to swim among the mangroves, but we also have two canoes or kayaks, and at high tide
our guests use them to navigate along the shore to the south, among the mangroves with their channels.

Want to try a trip on a Swhahili duggout outrigger?

Ngalawa   Mbarawa  Ngalawa

You can do this at Mbweni, as part of our free activities. Mbarawa, the beach attendant, will take you out in an "ngalawa" so you can try this most ancient vessel of the Swahili Coast. You can also use our canoes to paddle along the mangrove shore to the south of the hotel.

Embarking onto dhow  Dhows off Mbweni beach Mbweni dhow

Or take a longer trip in a local dhow, to Stone Town or the nearby sandbanks or islets, or for a sunset cruise

Mbweni ruined chapel  Mbweni Ruins

Romantic ruins from the era of Livingstone can be explored in their lush botanic garden environment,
and over the years we have striven to provide a personal and discreet service in one of  the most beautiful natural and historic situations in Zanzibar.

bushbaby   Sunset dinner

Try our Raintree Restaurant for great food in a stunning environment. You may find you are sharing dinner with the local bushbabies!
